The main character in Jack London's White Fang is White Fang, a wolfdog. Unfortunate events plague him his whole life and he believes it's him versus the world. Eventually White Fang learns that it's okay to let people in and love them.

White Fang is an ordinary wolf pup whose life is about to change. Raised by his loving mother Kiche and his ferocious father, White Fang begins to learn about the world. "His conclusion was that things were not always what they appeared to be. The cub's fear of the unknown was an inherited trust, and it had now been strengthened by experience. Thenceforth in the nature of things, he would possess an abiding distrust of appearances." As he grows up, White Fang grows close to his family, especially his mother.
