Student unions in universities increased its popularity in the 90’s. In many schools like Florida State University and Berkeley, white students established white student unions to oppose the action to help African Americans in the school. This caused many African Americans to voluntarily segregate themselves in dorms, bathrooms, classrooms, etc. Many kids who went to college got there with the mindset that they were an individual and at these schools many were judged and ridiculed so badly that they began to think of themselves as “African American” or Asian American”. They believed they were just part of a community and they could not be themselves (Wilkinson, 1997).
Although it seems like racial separation was becoming the only option for African Americans, there were many aspects that they excelled in. The 90’s had a wide variety of music styles, one of the most common was “freestyle” or “rap”. The rap genre was predominantly used and heard by African Americans. Segregation is no longer happening and African Americans are free to travel, eat, go to school, etc. wherever they want but studies show that there is a large population that still thinks African Americans shouldn’t have rights in our country. For example, the KKK is still in effect today. The people around you, which you may least expect, can be a member of the KKK. Regardless of the fact that we now have the first ever black president of the United States, the government cannot put a stop to these anonymous groups and agencies. The KKK that is happening today is not one giant group of people, it contains small chapters in every state of the country.
