This paper will be talking about one of the most famous gangsters of all time. James “Whitey” Bulger. This paper will be talking about how he ran South Boston “Southie.” It will also be talking about how he ran the underworld of South Boston. Whitey Bulger was born on September 3rd, 1929, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was one of six of Roman Catholic Irish-American pParents. James Bulger got the nickname “Whitey” for his white-blond hair. Bulger was a troublemaker as a child. He even lived out his own childhood fantasy of running away with the circus when he was ten years old. The first time James was arrested was when he was at the age of fourteen, for stealing. His offenses grew dramatically, coming in a string of bank robberies from Rhode Island to Indiana. In June of 1956, he was sentenced to twenty-five years in the federal prison. He only ended up serving nine years of the twenty-five year sentence. He served his sentence in Atlanta, Alcatraz, and in Leavenworth. After his sentence he returned to Boston to resume his life of crime. When Bulger returned from his nine year sentence he became an enforcer for the crime boss Donald Killeen. After Killeen was shot and gunned down in 1972, Bulger joined the Winter Hill Gang. He quickly raised up in the ranks of Winter Hill. He was ruthless he would do anything needed to get what he wanted or what the boss wanted, he did anything and everything to get the job done. Bulger sanctioned tons of killings. Federal sources say that Bulger’s life long friend FBI agent John Connelly tipped Bulger off in the 1995 indictment, allowing Bulger to flee with his wife Theresa Stanley. Bulger then returned a month later, after Stanley decided that she wanted to return to her children, Bulger soon fled again with his new mistress, Catherine Greig. In 1999 Bulger was officially named on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list, at one point he was the second most wanted fugitive behind Osama Bin Laden.
