Who Caused Romeo and Juliet’s Death In the classic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, two lovers try to live together, despite a variety of circumstances that try to stop them. Romeo and Juliet are teenagers who fall madly in love with each other, however, their families are not necessarily friendly. Romeo’s side, the Montagues and Juliet’s side, the Capulets have been fighting with each other since what seems like the beginning of time, in fact, they do not even know why they hate each other anymore. This could all change when Romeo spots Juliet from across the room at a party and falls in love immediately. After the ball, Romeo contemplates staying to find Juliet as his friends continue to go home. He ponders, “Can I go forward when my heart is here? Turn back, dull earth, and find thy center” (2.1.1-2). This symbolic metaphor reveals that Romeo is the ‘dull earth’ and Juliet is the center of his world. Romeo’s reckless decision to stay and spontaneous devotion to Juliet leads to a hasty marriage. As a result of his new familial connections, Romeo reevaluates his perception of the fiery Tybalt, who is his new cousin. When Tybalt kills Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, however, Romeo is forced to partake in the brawl that Tybalt and Mercutio started. Romeo lashes out at Tybalt by proclaiming, “Either thou or I, or both, must go with [Mercutio]” (3.1.131). A vengeful vow exemplifies the guilt Romeo feels for getting involved in the duel between Tybalt and Mercutio. Holding Mercutio back, Romeo causes his friend to die and must kill his murderer despite his kinship with Tybalt.
