An excellent leader possesses many characteristics that complement one another. One fundamental component of developing the perfect leader is for the leader to be selfless. Ralph from William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a fictional character who exhibits this quality. In the novel, a group of British boys aged 6 to 12 are stranded on a deserted island with no adults. The boys elect Ralph as their leader and Ralph's top priority as leader is to get everyone to be rescued. He does this by lighting a fire for a smoke signal to be rescued. When talking to Jack and the boys he states “The fire’s the most important thing. Without the fire we can’t be rescued. I’d like to put on war-paint and be a savage. Aristotle, one of the most ancient Greek philosophers, once said "He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander." (Aristotle). Aristotle was the student of Plato, another famous Greek philosopher, and the teacher of Alexander the Great. In this quote he is talking about how one leader that has not learned to obey, or to be humble, will never be a great commander. He passed this knowledge and others to Alexander the Great, his student at the time. Alexander would later become one of the world's greatest military generals, hence the name Alexander the Great. One of these characteristics for a good leader is for the leader to listen to their citizens and speak on behalf of those. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was the founding father of the country Turkiye. He fought in the Turkish War of Independence and was the first president of the Republic of Turkiye. Atatürk said in a quote "Your voice is my voice. Do not forget it" (Mustafa Kemal Atatürk). Atatürk after WWI and Turkiye was being divided by other countries, he united the country in order to fight back for their land. After fighting and gaining back Turkish land and re-conquering Istanbul, he implemented broad, progressive changes that made Turkey a democratic, developing country. He fought for those without a voice, and represented the whole country of Turkiye and is considered one of the greatest leaders in the 20th century. All he did was listen to the citizens, hence demonstrating how becoming a good leader needs you to listen to the public and the
