“The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller was based of the horrid events of the Salem witch trials. In the beginning Abigail Williams and the other girls of Salem were scared of getting into trouble for trying to conjure spirits in the woods. As a result, Abigail made the other girls such as: Betty Parris, Mary Warren, Ruth Putnam, and Mercy Lewis; lie and accuse innocent people of wrong-doings. In the end of the reading selection, the town realizes they let Abigail and the other girls fool them and many had perrished because of it. Arthur Miller focuses on three main characters in his selection. The first character he focuses on is Abigail Williams because she is the one who started the accusing. John told Abigail he didnt love her and thats what really ticked her off. Miller focuses on Proctor because John tried to stop the trials once Abigail accused Elizabeth, John would do anything to prove Elizabeth’s innocence. John tried to convince the court of her innocence by explaining that the reason Abigail doesnt work for them anymore is because he had an Affair with Abigail and Elizabeth knew, he knew it would blacken his name but, he wanted to save Elizabeth. The only way the court would believe them is if they heard it from Elizabeth, who had no insight of the converstation. When Elizabeth arrived and was asked she denied it to avoid ruining her husbands title but, she didnt know he had already told them. After this John was also accused by Mary Warren because of Abigail. The court allowed Proctor to speak with Elizabeth in hope that he would confess. Elizabeth told her husband that no matter what he decided to do she would not judge him, or love him any less. John refused to confess for this crime he had not committed and was said to have died for his pride and vanity. “My wife, my dear good wife, took this girl soon after, sir, and put her out on the highroad. Elizabeth was an honest woman, who was very kind. Miller focuses on her because she gets accused due to the curcumstance that Abigail didnt like her because she wanted john. Mrs.Proctor is like the middle man, shes the one John wants to spend his life with and the one Abigail wants to take from John. The court agrees to wait until Mrs. Proctor has her child to hang her. Elizabeth tells the court that if they believe she is a witch then they do not exist. Then, Elizabeth tells her husband to do what he thinks is right because she knows she cannot help him or herself for that matter.
