In the eyes of many, he was seen as a hero, contributing to the defeat of the Trojans with his strategic thinking, being favorable in the eyes of the gods, and possessing strength. Yet, he was one that dealt with suffering. He was away from home for over ten years. Those ten years spent longing for his wife and son, wasted on clinging to the last thread of his life, constantly battling creature after creature, and just barely evading death. An example of his yearning for home is when he is trapped on Kalypso’s island, “But when day came he sat on the rocky shore / And broke his own heart groaning, with eyes wet / and scanning the bare horizon of the sea” (V.163-165).
Achilles was the leader of the Myrmidons he was also the son of Peleus and the Nereid Thetis. He was the greatest fighter in all of the Achaean armies. One of the main parts of being a hero is having arete and kleos. Arete are the virtues of strength, beauty, and intellect. Kleos is personal glory.

In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, a young Jewish boy named Reuven meets a hasidic Jew by the name of Danny. These two boys have many similarities and differences, but what is perhaps the most important is the question of their future. Reuven has long wanted to be a rabbi once he grew up but for Danny, it wasn’t so simple, his future was chosen for him by his father, who was the Tzaddik of that particular Hasidic Jewish community. This means that Danny is supposed to follow in his father’s footsteps and become the next Tzaddik. While Danny has been trained to be a Tzaddik his entire life, only Reuven would come out to be a suitable religious leader.
Anybody can care for someone, but it takes a real hero to put others before himself. In addition of his leadership, another example is his trip to the underworld. When his ship arrives in the world of Hades, he tells his men that he shall go alone. Then, he bravely talks to Tiresias to learn how to get his men safely home. Overall, he saved his men's lives by risking his own and leading them to victory.
Throughout Book 22, Achilles tries again and again to chase down and kill Hector, and is finally able to do so. Before he actually kills Hector, he tells him “I wish my stomach would let me cut off you flesh in strips and eat it raw for what you’ve done to me” (Iliad, Book 22, 384-86). Shortly after Achilles allows the Greeks to stand around and continually stab the corpse of Hector. However, not even this brutality satisfied Achilles. Eventually, he ended up completely disgracing Hector’s dead body in front of all of Troy, tying him up to a chariot and dragging him around, being “defiled in his own native land” (Iliad, Book 22, 449).

The only thing on his mind is killing Hector. Achilles is so angry at Hector that he constantly thinks about killing him and getting revenge. His anger takes over his body and nothing can stop him from getting to Hector, not even the gods. Achilles gets to Hector and desecrated his body. Achilles does not give Hector a proper burial instead he parades Hectors body on the back of his chariot.
Achilles is superior to many others because, he serves as the Greek army 's best warrior. The Trojans are frightened by the strength that Achilles puts forth, that even his war gear makes them want to run away from him in terror. He shows his strength, as he is capable to conquer the power of Hector and defeat him. Achilles is invincible, unlike Hector, as shown when Homer states, “Achilles’ invincible arms-”(20.569) Achilles has a reputation as a power warrior, as shown throughout The Iliad. The face of death doesn’t stop his courage from shining through.
Hercules is best known as the strongest of all of the mortals, he is also stronger than many gods. He was the last mortal son of Zeus, and the only man born of a mortal woman to become a god upon his death. Offsetting his strength was a noticeable lack of intelligence or wisdom. He may have held grudges, but he would also do anything to help a friend. Once his anger passes, he was the most critical judge of his actions.

He is an eloquent and powerful figure, Othello shows to be a fearless soldier and general. and has been in the army for many years. He is used to the work of military life.
These abilities are important as a warrior because both his men and the hero reflect and are influenced by them. Some of the abilities are excellence in war, courage, leadership and fighting qualities. These qualities are seen through the heroic characters Hector and Achilles. When Achilles is not present with his men, the Greeks are well defeated by the Trojans with no motivation or support. Achilles is also described by his men as a power figure when the poem says “These were his words,/ and all Achaeans gave a roar of joy/ to hear the Prince abjure his rage.”
The Iliad also spotlights the individual qualities of a Greek hero or non-hero. Numerous characters in the Iliad demonstrated exceptional qualities of a Greek person that was valued, such as bravery and helpfulness and that was disproved of like selfishness. One trait that is highly appreciated by the greeks in the Iliad is bravery. In battle Hector killed Achilles´s best friend Pactorlos in battle.
Iliad is recognized as one of the most famous ancient monuments of literature. The full understanding of this epic poem is hardly possible without thorough analysis of its main characters. Among all the episodes of the Trojan War, Homer chooses the moment of Achilles’ wrath and thus creates a poem in which he becomes the central figure. From the Ancient Greeks’ point of view, Achilles represents the ideal of manliness and pure heroism, for he is brave and fights for heroics, not profits. Today, one can agree with this interpretation, yet Achilles is probably the most controversial character because he combines various personality traits and acts in accordance with his ambiguous nature.
