The Silent Patient by Alex Michealides is a psychological thriller about Alicia Berenson and the death of her husband. The novel begins with the first entry of Alicia’s diary where she professes her love for her husband Gabriel. About six years later news comes out that Alicia killed her husband. When police went to her house to investigate they found her inside with the gun that was used to kill her husband. When police take her into custody she refuses to speak to anyone and tries to kill herself. She continues to stay silent and she never says anything to anyone. When she is found guilty the media tries to figure out why she tried to kill her husband, but thanks to Diomedes the head of the grove she is put into the asylum where he works. …show more content…
When Theo goes to speak to Alicia he is disappointed when he sees that Alicia is heavily medicated and is unable to understand him. He goes to contact her brother-in-law Max and her Aunt Lydia, but both refuse to speak to him. In Alicia’s diary entry it reveals her mothers apparent suicide when she slammed her car into a wall with Alicia inside. Alicia wonders if her mothers tur intention was to kill her. Theo makes a request for Alicia’s medication to be reduced so he is able to speak to her and Diomedes agrees. During Theo’s and Alicia’s therapy day's session Alicia attacks Theo, but instead of Theo reacting in a negative way he says that this is progress because she is showing emotion. In Alicia’s net diary entry she and Gabriel had a fight over a gun in their house. It is later revealed that Max had sexually assaulted Alicia and even declared his love for her. Theo goes to meet jean-Felix to look at Alicia paintings in the storage. Jean reveals that he loves Alicia and finds her artworks amazing. Theo believes that Jean is more in love with her painting than he is with Alicia. This explains to Diomedes that Alcestis felt betrayed by her husband as she did not think that her husband would actually sacrifice himself for her. Theo believes that Alicia feels like she has died and they need to bring her back to life. In the end Theo learns that Alicia had overdosed and is in a coma. Theo finds the prick in Alicia’s wrist and finds out that someone injected morphine into her. They call the police and when Theo is questioned by Chief inspector Allen Theo blames Christian who lied about the overdose. Theo returns to the house of Kathy’s lover where it is revealed that every night he followed her, which the reader had been led to believe were on the same nights as his visits with Alicia, actually happened six years ago. Theo was Alicia’s mysterious stalker. Minutes before Alicia passes out from the morphine, she writes one final diary entry telling the truth. She reveals that she suspected that Theo was actually the stalker his first day at the grove. Because of this Alicia told him the wrong story that she knew for certain.
