Who Is Amir Evil In The Kite Runner

Khaled Hosseini develops Amir as an innocent character who makes poor decisions based on chapter seven of the novel The Kite Runner. Amir’s actions show that he really isn’t a bad person, but he aspired to be cowardly when he was put in a difficult situation. After he was put in this situation, he still expressed regret for his decision, which is something that an “evil” person wouldn’t do. Amir is not an evil person because he ran away out of fear and not out of hate for Hassan. For example, on page 77 it says, I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me. I was afraid of getting hurt. That’s what I told myself as I turned my back to the alley, to Hassan.” This proves that Amir would have helped Hassan but he froze up and ran away …show more content…

While some feel that Amir is not evil, his actions can prove otherwise. As Amir is running away from the alley, he has an internal conflict with himself on whether or not he made the right decision leaving him in the alley. As he thinks about it, he convinces himself that he wasn’t wrong for what he did because Hassan was a Hazara. However, evidence proves that Amir is not an inherently evil person. Article 2 states, “Evil can come in an obvious form, such as genocide. Or it can come in smaller acts of persistent harm, the effects of which accumulate, like parents being hostile and punitive, or a child being picked on by peers day after day for a long time.” This quote suggests that Amir isn’t inherently evil because despite his initial mistakes and harmful actions, he is able to recognize the harm he has caused and change his
