But these morals are taught and viewed differently in every household. Everyone has a different view on how to be a good person. For some, being a good person includes faith in others, it's being selfless, whatever that may be. Every person has a different idea of what it takes, including the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee. Harper Lee believes humans should try to embody the perseverance and empathy that Atticus Finch portrays in order to be a good person. Atticus is admired for his fatherly instincts. Throughout the novel, Atticus encourages his children to persevere, even when times become tough. Atticus Finch is a talented lawyer in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. When a black man named Tom Robinson gets unfairly accused of raping a white woman, Atticus takes on the case, at his own expense. Atticus has two children, Jem (10) and Scout (6). Throughout the trial, they are subjected to bullying from their peers because their father Atticus is defending a black man. In Maycomb, defending a person who was not white is not heard of. Scout asks her father if they are going to win the case. When her father says no, she wonders why Atticus would try to win the case if he knows they are going to lose. Atticus, being the loving father he is, explains to her that “‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win’”(Lee 87).
