In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
From Hobbit to Hero In most minds, heroes are bold, courageous, and popular. In The Hobbit, By J.R.R. Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins is introduced, and he really isn’t someone’s idea of a hero. But as the novel progresses, readers see that Bilbo truly is a hero.
Tolkien, is about a hobbit (A small mythical creature with very large feet) who goes on an unexpected journey with Thorin Oakenshield, a wizard (Gandalf), and 12 dwarves (Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur) excluding Thorin. This novel was written in third person limited, meaning that the narrator is telling the story only being able to see the thoughts of one character. Throughout the novel they are constantly being pressured and must push on no matter what. Bilbo Baggins (the hobbit) goes on this journey with Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the lost kingdom of the dwarves, or the Kingdom Under the Mountain, the mountain itself is named the Lonely Mountain. The band of dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf travel there to reclaim their lost treasure because there is a whole spew of wealth guarded by a greedy dragon, Smaug.
People in the world look up to heroes, people who are strong, smart, and unselfish. Every once in awhile, the audience meets a hero who they would think could never do it. This character is Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who only seems to care about food, But throughout, The Hobbit, he starts to prove the audience that he does a lot more than care about his next meal. Bilbo starts to show traits of a hero when he goes on his Took side, when he saves the group from the prison, and when he kills a spider. Bilbo starts being that heroic character from the beginning of, The Hobbit, when he starts to resemble his Took side.

The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
Bilbo Baggins is a short, friendly and celebratory hobbit, who lives in a hobbit-hole, in Hobbiton, the Shire. He likes to smoke tobacco, have multiple meals a day and live a quiet life. But his story really begins when Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, walks past his home. He asks Bilbo if he was willing to accompany him on his adventure. Bilbo politely declines, not wanting to have his peaceful life interrupted.
Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and Winkler believe after the hero’s departure, they are faced with a trial or many trails to overcome when they finally meet their biggest enemy, “The hero undergoes a series of trials often on a perilous journey.” (Campbell) Bilbo’s first trial is after Bilbo escapes from Gollum which he is reunited with the dwarves and are surrounded by Wargs but after it seems all hope is lost, eagles swoop down and save the adventures before it is too late. In Mirkwood, the dwarves and Bilbo are starving when they get captured by spiders, and Bilbo has to save them, “Bilbo saw that the moment had come when he must do something. ”(Tolkien 64) Bilbo escapes by himself and then finds the dwarves trapped and defenseless against a mob of spiders which Bilbo has to defeat by calling them names, and angering them until Bilbo has unraveled the dwarves.
Gandalf and thirteen dwarves visit Bilbo the hobbit. This dwarves were really trying to have a treasure that was protected by the dragon named Smoug. Thorin,(Dwarf Leader)says to them that they areleaving tomorrow for a trip that they may not really come back from. Bilbo
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a peaceful and comfortable life in his hobbit-home. His mother and father came from two different hobbit families, the Tooks and the Bagginises both of which were very rich and respected. One day Bilbo received an unexpected visitor called Gandalf who turned out to be a very famous wizard. He persuades Bilbo to join him on an adventure along with thirteen dwarves who were going to try and reclaim a treasure which had been stolen form them many years before. The dwarves weren’t impressed by Bilbo but Gandalf assured them that he would become very helpful.
