Everybody knows who he was, but nobody knows who he is. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is a novel that describes the conflicts and events that the people in Maycomb experience. The main characters include, Scout, Jem, Atticus, Dill, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Throughout the story, Atticus focuses on his case for Tom Robinson and trying the best he can to do the right thing for his children, Jem and Scout. The children, Scout, Jem and Dill constantly obsess over Boo Radley till the very end where all their questions are answered. Boo Radley is one of the many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird that was always misunderstood, people have always judged him based off of who he was and not who he could be.

Two words that best describe Boo are afraid but caring. He has been hidden away from everyone for years, scared to show his face. Though he had this fear, he still made an effort to store treasures in the hole of a tree for Jem and Scout to find. Even though he didn’t have the courage to actually talk to the children, leaving them knick knacks was his indirect way of friendship. Throughout the story, Boo is being built up. Jem says he’s not as interested in making Boo come out of his house and Scout follows with the same claim, but deep down they are both eager to see him. Of course, when they try for years will foolish ideas to get him to come out he doesn’t, but when they really needed him he was their. When Jem and Scout were attacked by Mr. Ewell, Boo was their to save them. Jem or Scout knew it at the time, but Boo Radley was the one to fight Mr. Ewell and carry Jem home. “The man was walking with the staccato steps of someone carrying a load too heavy for him. He was going around the corner. He was carrying Jem”(Lee 352) This was Boo 's first appearance in the book and it was a good one. They couldn’t help but to notice following footsteps. In attempts to see who was following them they would stop every few steps, unfortunately, whoever was behind them also stopped. Scout believes it is just Cecil Jacobs trying to scare them again, so she decides to scream at him. Soon after realizing it wasn 't him, Jem and Scout become more worried and begin to run. They didn’t get very far before being captured by the follower who later came out to be Mr. Ewell. After struggling for a few minutes, someone finally came to their rescue and carried Jem home. Little did they know, their hero was someone they’ve been trying to see for years, Boo. He came out of nowhere, took down Mr. Ewell and carried Jem home to seek help because he was badly hurt. Scout was present and conscious for all of this and didn’t know it was Boo till she saw him quietly standing behind the door, "He was still leaning against the wall. He had been leaning against the wall when I came into the room, his arms down and across his chest. As I pointed he brought his arms down and pressed the palms of his hands against the wall. They were white hands, sickly white hands that had never seen the sun, so white they stood out garishly against the dull cream wall in the dim light of Jem 's room”(Lee).
