This source is informing my thinking about what factors shaped soldiers’ individual and collective experiences by illustrating in depth the stories of these Canadian soldiers in the 1st Canadian Division. An example would be in Chapter 5: Green Clouds, which describes the pivotal reactions of the soldiers and how they dealt with the cruel situations they faced. These accounts help me understand how the soldiers developed their identities through their collective experiences, and how what they faced affected them, in either a positive or negative way. This source is shaping my research by keeping me interested in the topic ranges of which the book provides. Reading the source results in me doing further research on the things that stand out to me, such as the personal accounts of these soldiers, and other things that I know will further help me strengthen my

At this point of the memoir, Frank is confused about how he should act towards his father because he remembers the time that his father actually acted like a father and not a drunk (Shannon). In chapter eight, Frank compares his father to the Holy Trinity by describing the three different people he sees in his father. He separates his father from being a “parental figure” for him and being an alcoholic. Frank appreciates the good times that he spent with his father and cherishes their memories together but he knows that his father is too irresponsible to count on for anything (Gale).
Storytelling has such a large impact on all stages of life. Stories are told to teach a lesson, give hope, or get someone through a hard time. Tim O’Brien uses storytelling in his book, The Things They Carried, to teach lessons from war, and help readers understand about the baggage people bring to war. The publisher section of this novel has this warning in it, "This is a work of fiction. Except for a few details regarding the author's own life all incidents, names, and characters are imaginary” (O'Brien).

The war stories told through each individual soldier’s perspective, but more significantly, with their own emotions towards the war and the events which occurred during the war.
This shows us that we don’t have proof of the credibility of some of these memoirs. We could read a memoir, and be manipulated by the danger of a single story. Articles, newspapers, and books may be exaggerated and far from the truth. Many people will just read an piece of literature or hear of news and assume it’s true without second guessing it, especially if it is from the media. When referring to
