“If they would rather die...they had better do it and decrease the surplus population.” From the words of Scrooge, you can see that he is a heartless person, unlike the author, Charles Dickens, who had a hard life growing up, but uses his past for the better in his novels. Charles loved writing and many books came out of this passion. His writing was very rich and intense, sometimes too deep for the ordinary person to comprehend. Charles kept writing and writing because he never wanted to be poor again. He believed that his writing was key to a happy life. One who finds themselves in this situation should be comforted to know that hears those who cry out and those who need Him. Charles Dickens wanted to make sure everyone who found themselves in this situation could have hope of a Savior. He writes a lot about this topic and how those who need help cry out. Another verse about this topic is “The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.” The Lord hears even the people who don’t believe in him. God doesn’t just hear the poor, he also rescues the poor. “He will take pity on the weak and needy and save the needy from death.” this verse shows just that. God hears and rescues the poor, but he also blesses the people who help the poor. In many verses, including Proverbs 14:21 it says “it is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.” This verse speaks the truth, that those who help the poor, will not only get blessed from God but they will have helped those who needed help. It is our duty to take care of those in need. God repeats that over and over in His Word. Charles Dickens not only included this message in his books, but he also lived it out in his life. He is a great example of caring for the poor and those in need. He never forgot what it was like to grow up poor and having to live without. Even when he was young and poor, he chose to help others.
