De le Peña’s diary was a important piece of Texas history. Before the creation of Sleuthing The Alamo, weather or not De le Peña’s diary was authentic was still a mystery. James E, Crisp (the author of Sleuthing The Alamo) set out to find the truth about the diary’s authenticity, and documented the process in Sleuthing The Alamo. Jame E. Crisp (a historian) has unraveled secrets and answered questions regarding the secrets of the great Texas Revolution. A man as committed as this devoted countless days researching whether the De le Peña’s diary was credible.James E. Crisp displays heroic war heroes by using documents. Crisps uses the documents in order to display these heroic heroes in the past. Many Americans know the King of The Wild Frontier, other wise known as Davy Crockett, as he is seen as one of America's bravest soldiers. James E. Crisp does a spectacular job recognizing Davy Crockett's importance to the Texas Revolution.
Jose Enrique de la Pena was a soldier who’s diary played a very significant role by seemingly bringing to light the true fate of Davy Crockett. Basically, the diary revealed that Davy Crockett was imprisoned when he believed that he would be allowed to live. Although he believed this to be true, he was later executed. In order to find the answer Jame E. Crisp had to “understand de la Pena’s personal circumstances as he worked on his memoir between 1837 and 1839.”( Crisp 115) having this in mind we can conclude that in a letter that de la pena had sent it “states that de la Pena is so physically ill in prison that he cannot write for himself.” (Crisp 115) which lead us to believe that other people wrote for him.
