Who Is Desdemona's Jealousy In Othello

Vulnerability is found at the core of relationships. While with another person, one finds intensified happiness, sadness, and even jealousy. In the beginning of the play Othello by William Shakespeare, Desdemona and Othello sneak off to get married. Othello is black and high ranked in the military while Desdemona is a beautiful girl who’s father does not approve. Because of the color of his skin and other factors Othello seems to be really self conscious of himself. This self consciousness leads to jealousy while he goes on with his relationship with Desdemona. Othello’s real problem, in the midst of everything that happens, is his own jealousy. Othello stands up for Desdemona when first questioned. “Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore, Be sure of it; give me the ocular proof: Or by the worth of man's eternal soul, Thou hadst been better have been born a dog Than answer my waked wrath! (3.3)” When Othello says this to Iago, it is shown that he does indeed trust completely in Desdemona becuase of how offended he is when Iago even mentions it. Othello even talks about how he needs proof and that Iago had better been born a dog than face how angry he was in the moment. However when given proof, Othello went from standing up for Desdemona to the point where he wanted to kill her. “I'll see before I doubt; when I doubt, prove; And on the proof, there is no more but this,--Away at once with love or jealousy!(3.3)” This shows again that Othello feels he needs proof and is at about a 3 on the jealousy scale, but after he finds the handkerchief is not in Desdemona’s presence anymore Othello starts to crumble. “I'll tear her all to pieces. (3.3)”. His anger was enough to tear her to peices proving that after Othello is given a little bit of evidence he starts to fall into Iago’s plan, and becomes extremely jealous wanting to kill his own wife.
