In Salem 1692, the Puritans migrated from England to America, making America their home. They created a life simply based off extreme religious beliefs. In a Puritan belief system, behaviors that don’t seem real or can’t be explained were viewed as witchcraft. If witchcraft was believed to be the cause then the victim or the person accused would be tried in front of the court and possibly if believed guilty they would be hung and if they confessed however, they would still be punished but not in such a severe way. John has seen Abigail once since the witch craft started on behalf of Abigail’s little cousin who took fright when she, Abigail, and a group of girls went dancing in the forest to conjure spirts. Parris named Tituba. Tituba came to America in search of a better life but, the girls in Salem heard of her background in Barbados and tricked her into believing that witch craft would help them. Abigail had the idea of meeting that night and conjuring spirts to kill Elizabeth. She even drank chicken blood after Tituba told her it was a bad idea. When rev. Hale questioned Abigail about dancing in the forest she blamed it on Tituba and told everyone that she was forced to drink chicken blood. “She makes me drink blood!” (pg. 482) Tituba was really confused and denied everything thinking this would be the best way to save her, but she received a lot of negative attention for her reaction and was whipped for her actions. She quickly changed her story and made up that she made a pact with the devil and signed his book along with a few others after she was promised an even better life back in Barbados with a pretty dress. “You work for me, Tituba, and I make you free! I give you pretty dress to wear and put you way high up in the air, and you gone fly back to Barbados!” (pg. 484) Rev. Hale and Parris treated her differently now and even called her an instrument of God. “You are God’s instrument put in our hands to discover the Devil’s agents among us.
