Elizabeth Proctor, a character from the play The Crucible by Author Miller, is kind, mousy, and family oriented. Throughout the story, Elizabeth repeatedly shows that she cares more for the people around her than she cares for herself, even if that “person” is a rabbit. In act one, while speaking to her husband about dinner, she says “Pray God. It hurt my heart to strip her, poor rabbit.” (1162)
The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem witch trials in 1692. Several girls claim to be afflicted by witchcraft, then accuse people in the town of witchcraft who are usually people they dislike. Two of the main characters Miller focuses on are Abigail Williams and John Proctor. While Abigail Williams and John Proctor both start out with lying and selfishness, Abigail never gets better, she stays with her selfish ways while John works towards selflessness and becoming a better person; therefore, Miller displays the theme of selfishness vs. selflessness in relationships or choices.
“Character Analysis over The Crucible” Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. According to the Webster Dictionary, the definition of adultery is, “voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband,” which happens to be what Elizabeth Proctor drove her husband to do. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, Elizabeth Proctor continues to show her deficiency as a good wife throughout the play. Elizabeth is to blame for the tragic outcome of the play because she was a cold wife, she led her husband to commit adultery, and Abigail Williams feared her. Throughout the play, Elizabeth Proctor is known for being a cold and an improper wife.
The characters in the play, such as John Proctor and Abigail, are complex and two faced, and their interactions with each other help to convey the themes of the play. For example, John Proctor's struggle with his moral sense and his decision to speak out against the witch trials regardless of the personal cost, highlights the importance of individual integrity and standing up against injustice. Abigail's manipulation of the other characters and her role in instigating the witch trials serves to illustrate the destructive power of fraud and manipulation. Overall, Miller's use of characterization in “The Crucible'' effectively conveys the play's central message and helps to bring the story to life. In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible. In the beginning of the play (Acts 1 and 2), we focus on John Proctor and we know that he is a good puritan citizen, a hard-working farmer and who is a husband and father.
