In the short play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller The character John Proctor also known as Goody Proctor is both a husband and father and a mild aged farmer in his thirties. He is the protagonist of Arthur Miller 's play. The play is set in the puritanical town of Salem and expectations of their cultural background which is Christianity. Proctor’s main motivation is to protect his wife and family after committing adultery to Abigail and to prove his wife not guilty of witchcraft. He isn’t overly religious but he is a stubborn outspoken man.
Elizabeth Proctor lacks any qualities that signify she is a witch. When Reverend John Hale questioned the Christian character of the Proctor’s home, Elizabeth asserted, “There be no mark of blame upon my life, Mr. Hale I am a covenanted Christian woman” (Miller 1301). Elizabeth is a virtuous and honest woman. Her husband, John Proctor, testified of her genuine honest nature. He stated, “That woman will never lie, Mr. Danforth” (Miller 1320).

They see the actions of others, willing to give their lives to show that the leaders have it all wrong, and continue to persecute innocent people. Elizabeth is not such a character; she is devoted, strong and sees what is wrong in Salem. She does not give in to the lies, despite it nearly costing her life. Elizabeth is a dynamic character in the play, who changes her view on her husband’s wrongdoing when instead of blaming it all on him she takes some of the blame and says the some of her insecurities stopped her from believing in his love. Although she’s cold, Goody Proctor is a good wife to John, staying loyal through his trial and his imprisonment.
