Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in Minnesota. At that time he was the first child of Edward Fitzgerald and Mollie McQuillan, who survived because all of their other children had died. His father had a furniture business but it failed and the family moved to Buffalo, New York. After that Edward worked as a salesman. However, the family moved again and again, till they decided to live in St.Paul where F.Scott Fitzgerald entered St.Paul Academy. While he was a student he wrote many short stories and his first was “The mystery of the Raymond Mortgage”. The following year, he met Zelda Sayre, his future wife. They got engaged but she breaks their engagement because she felt insecure for her lover’s future. Disappointed, Fitzgerald leaves for St.Paul. He lived at his parents’ house and started rewriting his novel. Fitzgerald changed its name into “This Side of Paradise” and it was accepted by Scribners. He and Zelda become engaged again in January 1920, and after the success of the novel, they finally got married. The couple had a daughter named Frances Scott(Scottie). The family lived for a time in a rented house in Great Neck, Long Island. However, Fitzgerald’s work moved them from a place to another. When in France, Fitzgerald experienced the betrayal of Zelda with a French aviator. Anyway, this did not stop him from writing. He accepted an offer from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios in Hollywood. There he met Sheilah Graham and they started a three-year relationship that lasted until his death. Fitzgerald used to drink a lot and he was fired by the producer Walter Wanger, who hired him to work on a script for a film. He went to a New York City hospital and recovered, just so he could return to California and work on his scripts. His health conditions were bad and he died from a heart attack on December 21, 1940, at Sheilah’s apartment in Hollywood.
