The little known hero behind the safety of traffic and first responders was an African-American activist. Born in a small town in Kentucky, Garrett Morgan was not handed anything in life. Garrett Morgan proved himself by starting out in a low place in the world and ended up a genius, hero, activist, and innovator. It was his drive and curiosity that lead to his many great ideas and inventions. His lust for equality lead to his ambitious campaign for racial equality. Morgan’s social activism has left a debatably as large effect as his many lifesaving inventions. His philanthropy backed his passion for equality and his principles of equality and humanitarianism. Morgan was one of the founding members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He was also an active member of the Cleveland Association of Colored Men. His social activism was highlighted by the source of his generosity. Morgan gave the money he earned with his different inventions and ideas. Morgan’s willingness to give so freely fought the stigma that still has an impact on the African-American community in the United States. The stigma of poverty and selfishness with money is still being fought. The media has given racist example after racist example of the pseudo-ignorance within the African-American community. Garrett Morgan fought to show that a black man can and will give back to the community. The brutality of the attacks against Morgan may have not been as physically charged as some racial confrontations; however, he still fought to show his products and ideas are valid, and will take the world in a positive direction. Morgan gave a new and open interpretation of what it means to be a leader in, not only the African-American community, but in the general community as an Afro-American man.
