Harreit Tubman was an American hero and civil rights activist. She did many things like help transport escaped slaves to other states in the U.S. And Canada through the means of “the underground railroad”, she also worked with Susan B. Anthony, fought for women's suffrage, she was also a nurse in WW1 and helped many soldiers with their injuries. She was a great person and helped a lot in the fight against slavery and women's suffrage. Harriet Tubman was born around the time of 1820 on a plantation in Dorchester Maryland, Her parents, Harriet Green and Benjamin Ross, named her Araminta Ross and her nickname was “minty”. Harriet persevered and made it to Pennsylvania and earned her freedom. In Pennsylvania she found a job as a house-keeper, but she wasn't okay with just having freedom, she wanted freedom for her friends and family as well. She returned to Maryland and collected her niece and her two daughters and brought them to freedom. She tried to bring her husband John, but he had remarried and wanted to stay close to his new wife. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made it harder to bring escaped slaves up north due to the fact that if found they must be returned to their owners in the south, because of this she had to bring them all their way to Canada on a grueling trip. She carried a gun with her to protect herself and “encourage” her passengers to keep on going, she often drugged babies to prevent slave catchers from hearing their cries. Over the next 10 years, Harriet befriended other abolitionists such as Fredrick Douglas, Thomas Garrett and Martha Coffin Wright, and established her own Underground Railroad network. Harriet personally led at least 70 enslaved people to freedom, including her elderly parents, and instructed dozens of others on how to escape on their own.
