According to them, adultery is the biggest sin and if anyone was found committing this kind of sin then they will be punished and have to wear “A” on their dress for committing the shameful act. In the novel, Hester lifted the weight of the scarlet letter on her shoulders because the Puritan community forced her to wear the letter “A”. This demonstrates the importance of geography and demonstrating the community’s religious viewpoints because of its place. If the story had taken place somewhere else then Hester would not have to through this agony. Geography is the device that makes the story.

When Hawthorne was writing this novel he described the puritans as a sad, bland society which had a reliance on the consequence of sin. His description of the Puritan society was not fully opinion-based since the Puritans that came over from England did dress simply. This leads the reader to wonder how much of his personal opinion made its way into the story and how much is historical fact.

Activity: I don’t favor one girl over the other based on what side they had presented. Since they were assigned the topic, there could be no correlation between whether or not I have a preference between Trinae and Dayna. I listened to both arguments with equal attention. Both girls seemed to present adequate amount of facts and support to back up their chosen stance. Trinae presented the anti-abortion side.
