Arna Bontemps works is often times linked with the Harlem Renaissance, however, there is another poet that when thinking of this time, that always comes to mind. Langston Mercer Hughes was born on February 1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. Southern living during this time, was surrounded with a thick cloud of racial tension, luckily for Hughes, he did not live in Missouri long. Like Arna, Hughes was not fully black as both of his partners were biracial. However, unlike Bontemps, his partners separated when he was young, leaving Langston with feelings of rejection and abandonment.

FROISSART’S CHRONICLES This paper will discuss the view of Jean Froissart (c. 1337-1410), his place in history as well as his weaknesses and strengths. Froissart’s Chronicles is his best known work and looks at a period in European history during the first half of the Hundred Years War, which was a war between England and France that took place from 1337 to 1453. Froissart was a Frenchman, born in Valenciennes, which is now a part of Belgium, but he also spent some time serving in the English court among nobility.1 Froissart was neutral in his account of the events of the Hundred Years’ War.
Upton Sinclair was born in Maryland in 1878. Was an American author who wrote more than 100 books. He was involved with socialism which encourage him to write about the meatpacking industries. Eventually he wrote a novel named the jungle resulted in the best-selling novel. When he was little he didn’t have an easy life.
Jean Toomer was an important American Poet during the Harlem Renaissance. One of his most famous work was Cane, which he wrote after his experience in the south as a school principal. Cane consisted of a collection of poems and stories, and it played an important role during the Harlem Renaissance. Toomer wrote about the African American slaves and the circumstances they faced during harvest. Harvest Song, which appears in chapter 27 of the book Cane, and it is a poem written in first person in which the narrator is a reaper who works in the field.
Within these people, was a very famous individual ;his name was Upton Sinclair. Sinclair was born in eighteen eighty-seven and died ninety years later in New Jersey. Upton Sinclair, for the most part, wanted to find a solution and empower the working class individuals. He was able to show the conditions of the meat packing industry with writing a book. He became a very well known for the writing of this book.
Upton Sinclair, a novelist, writer, journalist, political activist, and politician, was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair began college at the age of 14 at the City College of New York. Sinclair aspired to be a poet, but eventually followed a different route. He began working on literary works that would cause major reforms in society. In 1904, Sinclair spent seven weeks in disguise in Chicago’s meat packing district to research his novel, The Jungle.

John E. Steinbeck Jr. was born on February 27, 1902, Salinas, Ca. Steinbeck is the winner of the “Nobel Prize in Literature.” He has been called “ a giant of American letters.” Steinbeck wrote a book called The Red Pony in 1933. The first three sections were published in magazines from 1933-1936, and the full book was published in 1937 by Covici Friede.

Many people of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts movements, along with later movements, described Toomer’s work in Cane as an inspiration in their own works. “When the writers of the early Harlem Renaissance read Cane, they were pleasantly surprised. Jean Toomer mostly associated with progressive white writers of the late 1910s and 1920s. After writing Cane, he was proclaimed by the black writers as the most promising black writer of that time” (Whisenton 5). His work in Cane was applauded for its recognition of African American culture and struggles, along with its representation of sexual issues that are still overly present.
American novelist, poet, and playwright Langston Hughes was born in Joplin Missouri in February 1902. Soon after he was born, his parents separated, and his father moved away to Mexico. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, until her death. After she died, he began to write poetry and Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg were major early influences in his work. After he graduated from high school in 1920 Hughes spent the next year with his father in Mexico.

If someone has too much power, can that lead to that person becoming corrupt?. During the middle ages the church was corrupt and many church officials abused their power in order to steal money from the peasants. The Pardoner uses his speaking skills and church position to steal money from the poor peasants who don't know any better. Chaucer depicts the corruption among the Clergy during the Middle Ages through the Pardoner's tale. Chaucer also depicts how the Pardoner's appearance is a reflection of him.
