The novel of To Kill a Mockingbird is written by Harper Lee. She wrote about how life was for the young girl named Scout. Scout is living with her father Atticus Finch and her older brother Jem Finch. Scout is close to being six and Jem is ten. Jem is very adventurous and protective of Scout. Since Scout’s mother passed away when she was two, she did not have any real memories of her. Jem has a few memories of her which can occasionally make him sad. The mother had died from a heart attack changing the children’s life. Atticus is a lawyer and he was to defend Tom Robinson in the court case (Harper Lee Biography). Atticus likes to teach his two children new things. In the time period of this book it was rough for many people. A big part in To Kill a Mockingbird is racism.
They are living in Maycomb, Alabama in the early 1930s during the Great Depression. Maycomb was an old town in the south living on a residential street. In the house it was Atticus, Jem, Scout and Calpurnia their cook. Jem and Scout loved their father; he read to them played with them and cared for them. Scout would always argue with Calpurnia, but Socut would never win the argument. Calpurnia had told Scout and Jem that they have to within calling distance of the house. There was racism being shown by the white people to the black people in Maycomb. One big way of racism was when Tom Robinson was convicted with raping a white woman. The white woman was Mayella Ewell and the evidence of this case was very low. It didn’t seem that from such low evidence he can be found guilty that easy. I would say that he was such a good person that he would not do rape her. Once the trial starts you can figure it out that he did not do anything wrong. For example, she had a black eye and Tom Robinson did not have a left-hand after the accident he had a long time
