How society views others becomes a developing theme throughout the two pieces of literature, the play “The Crucible” written by Arthur Miller and Sam Roberts article, “Father Was a Spy”. The town of Salem in “The Crucible” undergoes a major quarrell throwing accusations at almost anyone, without proper information. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are thrown in jail and charged for conspiracy, however they claim no unlawful actions are taking place on behalf of them. In both situations reputations are destroyed resulting in a multitude of negative factors. Trust is lost, friends are afraid of each other, jobs are lost, and very commonly, death occurs. Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” obtains a theme that is an ongoing battle of reputations that similarly relates to “Father Was a Spy” by Sam Roberts’s theme. Acquiring a good reputation means that one can be accepted by society. A main character, John Proctor is indecisive whether he should admit to his crime or keep his reputation. Proctor recently had an affair with the teenager Abigail Williams. However John proctor has built up his reputation and respect for his name. Yet after court hearings he faces the choices, to live or to die. Accusations have added up to now argue that John Proctor has been involved with witchcraft. At this point, Proctor is willing to do anything to preserve his good name. He will not sign his name to a lie nor can he accuse others of his sin. Nevertheless, he lies about his own sins while filing accusations towards innocent villagers. After fighting for his reputation and observing others go down as nobel people, he finally admits to his crime.
