aertes is one of the characters in William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet. He is the son of Polonius and the older brother of Ophelia. Laertes cares and loves both his father and sister very much. When Laertes first appears in the play, he warns his sister about her relationship with Hamlet. This shows Laertes to be a bit overprotective towards his sister’s well-being, since he doesn’t want her to experience a heartache. He also loves his father very much. When he discovers that his father has been killed, he rushes over to Denmark in order to avenge his noble father’s murder. Laertes says he will do anything in order to avenge his father, and that “the both worlds” he gives “negligence, let come what comes”(4.5). However, Laertes shows how much he loves his sister when he tells the gravediggers to bury him with his sister. At first, he may seem like a minor character; however, as the story proceeds his role becomes important. He is the cause of Hamlet’s demise and his own. When Laertes discovers that Hamlet is the murderer of his dear father, he eagerly joins forces with Claudius. They make plans to kill Hamlet, but they do not realise the mistake they are making.
