“I might be dead by the time the book gets published, or I might not be”(Burcaw, 4). Shane Burcaw is the author of the book, Laughing At My Nightmare, an autobiography about his life. He had a disease called Spinal Muscular Autopsy(SMA) since he was about 3-4 years old. This disability has a rate of 1 out of 10,000 in the US, which is very rare. Because of this, most people are not very aware of this disease. However, Shane Burcaw uses various literary elements to help the audience understand his book. During the story, Shane Burcaw explains, “Obviously, the way I play sports, actually is a lot different”(105). This quote is from the situation where Burcaw explains about his life playing sports with others, though he has a disability that highly affects his movement. Since most of the readers might not have been through the situation that they would have the same Spinal Muscular Autopsy disease just like Burcaw, the comments written in the book are unusual and atypical. The comments are also one of the elements that help the Burcaw and the audience develop the overall story and also the explanation of the conflicts that the Burcaw had experienced. Since the comment is a lot different, it is solely from Shane Burcaw, the element of 1st person's perspective shows the conflict and comments. Burcaw also states, “Luckily for me, the counselors at the camp soon realized I was slightly different from most of the other kids”(88). This was introduced when Shane Burcaw explained his experience in the camp where they only had children with disabilities. The quote also shows the writer’s direct comment from the situation where the counselors noticed the difference between Shane Burcaw and the other counselors.
