The Book Thief was an excellent film displaying Nazi Germany, leading up to and the beginning of the war. A character, Liesel, was adopted to new parents because her birth parents are killed for being communists and speaking out against Hitler. She went to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann, on Himmel street. There, she has a shaky start, but meets many friends, including Rudy, and a Jewish man named Max. Liesel feels especially close her new parents, Hans and Rosa, but is more drawn and feels a special connection to Hans. Firstly, Liesel feels closer to Hans than Rosa because of personality. Rosa was a naturally strict person, who knew the circumstances around them. She loved Leisel, just as much as Hans did, however she had a different way of showing it. It is difficult for her to display her compassion toward anyone, even if she truly feels that way on the inside. Rosa displays “tough love”, being a stern woman. She believes showing her true feeling and being soft to be a weakness. She calls only those she loves “saumensch” or “saukerl”, not to be mean, but because she loves them. However, Rosa’s relationship with Liesel changed toward the end of the movie, allowing herself to show the more loving side of herself twice. First she interacted with Liesel, Hans and Max joining in to the snowball fight and afterwards making the snowman, though after, she tried to cover it up saying it was the “stupidest thing she had ever done”. Rosa also showed her softer side visiting Liesel’s school to tell her of Max’s recovery. Rosa could have waited until Liesel got out of school, but she knew how much Liesel cared about Max. When Rosa first entered Liesel’s classroom, everyone was stiff, as they knew of Rosa’s reputation of sternness. But, when Rosa carried Liesel into the hallway, Rosa displayed compassion, and almost started tearing
