Lou Gehrig
Henry Louis Gehrig was born on June 19, 1903 in New York City, New York. His parents were Christina and Henrich Gehrig; they were German immigrants. Lou had one wife, named Elenor. Gehrig had died June 2, 1941 in Riverdale, New York City, New York. Lou Gehrig is a hero from the past for almost overcoming ALS and his mark on baseball.
Lou went to college at Columbia University, where he studied engendering played fullback on the football team, and also played baseball. He pitched solidly, gaining the nickname “ Columbia Lou”. The New York Yankees were not only looking at him for his pitching, but also his batting. In the year of 1923 the Yankees signed Lou to a professional contract, which included $1,500 signed bonus. This allowed him to play baseball full time. Gehrig had played a 2,130 consecutive game streak. This is one reason why Lou Gehrig is a hero.
With the help of his teammate Babe Ruth, they performed an unmatched power-hitting tandem. It was a struggle for Gehrig to make new friends with his fellow teammates, especially Ruth. But his ability to play through incredible pain, and always hard working, he got another nickname “The Iron Horse”. He leads the Yankees club up to the World Series. ALS became known as “Lou Gehrig disease”. Gehrig said his final goodbyes to his fans and baseball on July 4, 1939, with a short tearful speech. "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." Thanking his parents, wife,and teammates with "I might have been given a bad break, but I have an awful lot to live for. Thank you." In 1941 Lou's health greatly deteriorated. He remained at home, to frail to go out. On June 2, 1941 Henry Louis Gehrig passed away in his sleep at his home.
