Since Florida became a state more than 170 years ago, it has been changing for the better. Many have helped shaped Florida into what it is today, including some Hispanic Americans. Marco Rubio, who is not only a Hispanic American and a native of Florida, but a proud member of the community. An amazing politician, Rubio shaped Florida by helping the local community and the statewide community.
Born in Florida, Marco Rubio started his political career by helping his local community in Miami. Graduating from the University of Miami in 1996, Marco Rubio began his political career by running for one of two seats on the West Miami City Commission. As the son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio wanted to make sure that the American Dream was achievable by everyone and anyone. In 1999, an unexpected vacancy occurred in the Florida House of Representatives and Rubio jumped at the opportunity. In the year 2000, Rubio challenged the better known, Angel Zayón, for the Representative seat and won. According to Patricia Mazzei from the Miami Herald, “ ...he used his early arrival to the statehouse — fellow freshmen lawmakers wouldn’t be sworn until the following year — to round up support as House speaker in 2006”. Upon getting to the Florida legislature, Rubio had his heart set on much higher things, including becoming the Speaker of the House. Marco Rubio quickly moved up the chain of command, becoming the majority leader in 2003 then Speaker of the House in 2006. Before Rubio took his post as Speaker of the House, he wrote a book called 100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future. The ideas in this book were taken from conversations Rubio had with Floridians. Rubio proposed the ideas in this book to the Florida legislature. As Speaker of the House, Rubio helped turn more than half of the ideas in the book into laws.
