Guy Montag in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury best epitomizes a hero, compared to the boy in “Run Boy, Run” by Woodkid and the speaker in “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, because Montag is trying to help everyone not just obtain one goal, for himself. Montag goes through the twelve stages of the hero’s journey during the story. Those stages can be spilt up into four groups; the first being, call to adventure. In Montag’s ordinary world he is a firefighter who burns books. In his town having books is illegal. Montag continues to do this without thought until he meets Clarisse who asks him, “Are you happy?” At first Montag thinks about this, but then agrees that his thoughts of not being happy are crazy. Faber acts as Montag’s mentor and helps him pass tests that may come his way; including his argument with Beatty. The third group Montag goes though is his transformation. Montag eventually realizes that this town he lives in is wrong. Beatty sees Montag starting to change. The firemen get a call and find out that Montag has books. The approach is when Montag pulls up to his house, about to burn it. Once they burn his house he can’t take it and kills Beatty and the mechanical hound; which was the ordeal. Then Montag finally leaves to a place he belongs. Montag finds Granger and gains access to their knowledge. The last stages of Montag’s journey is in the road back/the hero’s return. Montag and granger walk back to the city to spread their knowledge; this is his road back. Montag’s atonement stage is when he realizes what he can share with all these people and the future. The book doesn’t really include a return but it could be interpreted as Guy Montag now having an enlightened mind.
