Montresor was vengeful because he wanted to get revenge on Fortunato. So Montresor was malicious throughout “The Cask of Amontillado” because he was intending to harm Fortunato. Montresor had a plan to kill him. He lured Fortunato by making him believe that there was Amontillado in his Family’s vaults. Montresor lied to Fortunato by stating, “ My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met… But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.” He lied to him about how he was “luckily met..” because really all Montresor was trying to do was put on an act on how he was being nice to him. He just wanted to lure him to the vaults so there were alone and so that he could continue on his plan to kill him and seek revenge.
