George Orwell’s classic tale, Animal Farm, includes an interesting cast of characters, but perhaps the most infuriating character is Napoleon. Napoleon is a ferocious pig whose main goal is to obtain a totalitarian reign over Manor Farm, or “Animal Farm”. Interestingly enough, some of Napoleon’s tactics and behavior can compare to that of Raul Castro. Castro has been the President of Cuba since 2008 upon his brother, Fidel Castro, stepping down from the presidency due to failing health. Napoleon and Raul Castro controlled their people without spending much time in the public light, by eliminating anyone by whom they felt threatened, and by restricting the rights of their people. Castro is known to give speeches in a dull, emotionless manner that comes off as very business-like. Similarly, Napoleon is not a very skilled speaker, so he usually uses another pig, named Squealer, to communicate with the other farm animals. Herein lies a similarity between Napoleon and Castro. In Animal Farm, Napoleon forces four pigs to confess to being in cahoots with Mr. Jones, the previous owner of Manor Farm. However, these public confessions are false, but Napoleon uses the declaration of guilt as justification to sentence the pigs to death. In this way, Napoleon gets rid of the four pigs that he thought were threatening to his absolute power over the farm.
