Phyllis Schlafly: One Woman’s Argument Against Feminism
Feminism has been a large movement in America for years that has fought for equal rights between men and women. It has grown and morphed throughout history. It has become something that very few choose to fight against. Nevertheless, Phyllis Schlafly chose to take up the fight and show everyone that feminism is not what people wanted it to be. She proves that women have had vital roles in society and that women are privileged individuals; all before the feminist movement. Therefore, Schlafly proves that the feminist movement is not ideal for anyone in society.

Feminist wanted special advantages they felt they deserved. Everyone wants to have advantages in life, but finding that privilege is not the same for everyone is a disappointment for some. For example, a young man might be considered “privileged” if they get an extra bonus at work. That same man does not feel privileged because the only reason they got an extra bonus was to pay for their sick wife’s medicine. It is all about perspective. Schlafly does not feel that women are underprivileged. Men had expectations on how they should treat women. Men were expected to treat women exceptionally by “...opening doors for women…” and “…help them in and out of automobiles…” (Schlafly) They treated women like the most privileged people in the world; yet to feminists that was not good enough. Feminists wanted more privileges. They began to want more than an open door or a hand to hold. They wanted everything to be equal. Which leads to putting men down and becoming more individualistic. Once women started to put themselves equal with men, it was hard for men to continue being gentlemen. All expectations were dropped and forgotten. Schlafly wanted women to remember that men treated them with utmost respect and kindness, but feminists decided that it was not enough. They wanted more outside of what men were giving them.
