Ned Kelly: Hero, Villain or Victim Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly was a “troublemaker” for the Victorian police. At the age of 12 he was sent to jail and he spent 3 years in jail for stealing a pig. Over his life, he stole hundreds of cattle and horse, robbed two banks and killed three innocent policemen. He was hanged in 1880 and the government collected more than 32,000 signatures in five days on a petition from the townspeople, who were against the death of Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly was born in 1854 and lived a couple of kilometres north of Victoria. Both his parents had an Irish background. When he was 12 years old, his father died leaving his mum a widow with seven children. What Australia didn’t know was, this was the beginning of a man that changed Australia to a place where people were treated equally forever…. Ned robbed two banks consisting of 2000 pounds each before he was hanged. He also burned many documents that showed which people had to return money they borrowed to the rich. While setting lit to them, he murmured and complained, ‘that the banks were an enemy of the poor’. Constable Lonigan, Constable McIntyre, Scanlon and Kennedy were camping at the banks of Stringybark Creek. While Scanlon and Kennedy went out hunting birds for lunch, Ned marched in to their camping grounds and Constable Lonigan. Constable McIntyre quickly surrendered before he was also shot. When Scanlon and Kennedy returned from hunting, they saw Ned pointing a gun at them and one of their friend’s dead. If you saw a close friend/relative dead, wouldn’t you want to avenge them? I would, in fact I would be boiling with emotions. Rage, anger, hate…all the negative emotions. I believe Ned Kelly is a man who does not deserve to be respected because he murders people without a second
