Conflict is something that has been disrupting and damaging society for centuries. In such conflicts, one would expect parents to act as peacemakers. However, in some cases, parents act as quite the contrary. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a major conflict is demonstrated through the Montagues and Capulets; two feuding families in the city of Verona. Their feud is ultimately what leads to the play's tragic ending. Romeo is banished from Verona for killing a Capulet named Tybalt. Juliet is forced by her parents to marry a man named Paris. Friar Lawrence makes a plan to get Juliet out of marrying Paris. The parents are responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because their conflict and actions inadvertently led to the events of Romeo's banishment, Juliet's arranged marriage with Paris, and Friar Lawrence's plan to get Juliet out of marrying Paris.

In Act Three Scene Five, Capulet arranges for Juliet to be married to a man named Paris. However, the issue is more about Capulet's anger when Juliet refuses to marry Paris. This is demonstrated when Capulet says "My fingers itch"(Shakespeare III, v, 164), and threatens to disown Juliet. If Juliet told Capulet that she cannot marry Paris because she is married to Romeo, Capulet would be very angry because she is married to her family's enemy. In addition, Lady Capulet would be angry because Romeo is the one who killed her nephew, Tybalt. Her anger is demonstrated when she says "As that the villain lives which slaughter'd him... That same villain Romeo"(Shakespeare III, v, 79, 81). The conflict between the two families is the reason why Juliet cannot tell her parents the truth without potentially facing negative consequences.
