Ed Gein was the man that inspired the birth of these murderers, and he is all too real. Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27, 1906, in Plainfield, Wisconsin. His mother, Augusta Grafter, and his father, George P. Gein, were not exactly very good parents.
Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.
This hesitation and doubt causes the crystal merchant to conform, and instead live his life simply “dream[ing] about Mecca” (55). This choice of conformity forever abstains the crystal merchant from pursuing his dream, as he himself admits, “[he is] not going to go to Mecca” (61). Another example of submitting to the fear of failure is when the Englishman searches for the Alchemist in desire of achieving the Master Work and learning alchemy - the science of turning lead into gold. However, the Englishman is far too afraid to attempt the act himself and adapts to that fear through means of literature. He wallows in his fear by spending “enormous amounts of time at the great libraries of the world, and [by purchasing] all the rarest and most important volumes on alchemy” (66), too fearful to ever perform alchemy itself.

Santiago still struggles to find meaning and purpose throughout his many years of travel though. It's not until he goes on the journey to follow his personal legend that he truly develops as a character. In the excerpt from the story The Alchemist, and alchemist tells a young boy to listen to what his heart tells him, even if it is treasonous. The boy at first hesitates on taking his advice, he began asking the alchemist questions, such as "You mean I should listen, even if it's treasonous?" and "Why don't people's hearts tell them to continue to follow their dreams?". However, the boy eventually takes the alchemist's advice, which helps him through his suffering over a woman that he had passion for that he met in the desert. What the alchemist really meant by "Listen to your heart" is that you should really follow what the voice that is deep down inside tells you to do.
This is illuminated when the Alchemist says, “‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure’” (141). This particular moment shows that even though Santiago has both the ability and the knowledge to achieve his dream, it is impossible to attain it if he fears even attempting to reach it. Consequently, this fear acts as his enemy and a barrier that stands in the way of the meaningful and happy life he is destined to accomplish. Furthermore, another one of his fears is the fear of losing what he believes he has already earned. ” He reminded himself that he had been a shepherd and that he could be a shepherd again.
Santiago then tells the alchemist: “My heart is a traitor. It doesn’t want me to go on.” The alchemist replied with a smart answer and said “That makes sense. Naturally, it’s afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you’ve won.” A fear of uncertainty is what Santiago is feeling and he worries he’ll lose everything he’s accomplished so far.
Many people may not know much in the way of their identity. The challenges can help people learn about themselves through the actions they take and what they can achieve in the face of adversity. The theme of treasure appears very early on in the story. Santiago, a travelling Shepherd, has a dream one night telling him that his treasure awaits him by the pyramids of Egypt. This dream sparks his journey where along the way, the people he meets and the experiences he has shape and transform his idea and perception of treasure. In the end, Santiago finds his physical treasure but his journey is not over as he had once feared. Santiago’s perception of treasure has transcended the physical and now he has respect for the treasure of home, knowledge and love.
