Stephen King Stephen King was born in Maine in 1947, and eventually became an avid writer of mostly horror stories. At one time, Stephen King suffered with alcohol and drug problems, but his family told him he had to get clean or they were leaving. So, he did get clean of the drugs and alcohol. You might ask what all this has to do with his essays. Well, knowing all this about him should be taken into consideration when talking about some of his stories he wrote. Most of his stories are based in New England, mainly in Maine, where he was born and grew up for most of his life. He likes writing about how people relate to one another in a scary situation. He incorporates a lot from his actual life into some of his writings. As a young child, he had a nightmare that he walked into a room and seen a person that committed suicide hang from the ceiling. This scene was later put into and early book, “Salem’s Lot”. King was in the middle of one of his series, “The Dark Tower”, when he was hit by a truck walking one night. Ultimately, surviving the accident is what prompted him to finish the series. In the book, “The Shining”, he based himself on the alcoholic father. He wrote this book due to his struggles with alcohol in the 1980’s and that is why he based the alcoholic father on himself. In the short story, “All That You Love Will Be Carried Away”, the main character is struggling with depression. Whether or not he is wanting to take his own life. I think Stephen King related himself to this story. Where it says, “Alfie stood there counting to sixty inside his head, waiting to see if the wind would stop,” (104). I think this is how Stephen King felt at some point in his life. Like he was saying if a certain thing happens then I will continue to write.
