In the movie Atlas Shrugged, main characters Dagny and Hank each have businesses that are important to the economy. Dagny is the Vice President of Taggart Transcontinental, where she is in charge of operations there. Hank is the creator of Rearden Steel. Throughout the movie these two try to keep the economy flourishing, and their businesses going, while the government puts regulations and new laws into place to try and “help” the economy. Is the government really helping though? In this paper, I will be explaining to you why the antagonist in this movie was the government, for trying to fix the economy through regulations and new laws. The problem is the government doesn't like that Hank and Dagny own monopolies. They make new laws because they are trying to make things more fair for people. The government was trying to get the world to perfect competition where there are no monopolies. The way the government interferes within the economy has an effect on businesses and individuals. When fiscal and monetary policy is adjusted, the government has the ability to slow down or speed up the economy. In the movie when this happened, the effects were felt.
