All around the world, people create order in different ways. In the book Lord of the Flies, the group of boys that are stranded on a deserted island need to survive. The boys try to create rules and assign jobs to certain people. Many books have symbols in their story to represent something else and give the book a deeper meaning. Some symbols may be represented by events, items, or characters in the book. Throughout the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are various symbols represented by the characters, Ralph and Piggy, and the conch. After everyone gathered to one area, they had a meeting where they decided Ralph would be the leader because he is the one who blew the conch. The conch represents authority and order. A simple item like a conch represents the authority on the island because, ‘“I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking’” (Golding 32). Besides the conch, Ralph definitely represents the leadership and order on the island. Ralph tries to organize and create jobs for everyone to do. Such as the choir boys will make a fire and some of them would hunt. He also wants the boys to make shelters in case it rains. But no one else is working except for Simon and him. He is annoyed that not many people are working in order for them to survive. He said that, ‘“I bet if I blew the conch this minute, they’d come running. Then we’d be… very solemn, and someone would say we ought to build a jet… When the meeting was over they’d work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting’” (Golding 53).
