The author of the Odyssey was a man named Homer, a Greek author. He considered himself an ‘oral singer’, or an oral poet. Many people admired and were/are inspired by him. Because his poems were so iconic, some people consider him to be “one of the greatest of the world’s literary artists.” He also wrote another poem called Iliad, which was also very popular and helped him rise to fame. Homer wrote the Odyssey around eighth century BCE, which was around the time after he wrote Iliad. The first book of the series is called The Iliad. This book is known to be the longest poem Homer wrote. The book revolves around the Trojan War and the time of the city of Troy. Many people thought this was “one of the greatest works of literature” he’d written. In The Iliad, Odysseus is seen as the “knight in shining armor” because, throughout the story, he’s very noble, attentive, and intelligent. He always knew what to do at just the right time. Odysseus had very keen instincts, and helped a great deal in the Trojan War with being a fighter and getting Achilles to join the war. Odysseus was the glue that held the war together; he was the brains of the operation. Even though the Trojan War was a myth, there very well is a somewhat respectful amount of proof to change your mind. There seemed to have been proof that there was, in fact, a war going on at the time the Trojan War happened. A man by the name of Heinrich Schliemann, began excavating the area of where the city, Troy, would lie. He found proof that Troy was real and that there was a war going on at that place in time. It is said that Helen has “the face that launched 1000 ships”. Ultimately, she caused the Trojan War because she was captured by the King of Troy’s son, which caused Menelaus, Helen’s husband, to go after her and receive revenge no matter what the
