In Andrew Smiths novel, 100 Sideways Miles, the protagonist starts out as a very knowledgeable and well behaved kid named Finn, but when he sets off on a journey throughout his dads book, he becomes a mysterious and courageous character. Finn is not an ordinary sixteen year old, has very interesting and mysterious. For example, “I am not the only one who sometimes thinks I came from the pages of a book my father wrote.” Finn believes that he is living a life that his father wrote so he never leaves him. Because of this, he doesnt think hes living the real life he wants to live. In addition, “There is something about the dark of night that makes me feel safe,like i'm not constantly being watched too see if i'm okay.” He feels like nobody is controlling him and he's on his own. For example, “Happy Birthday Finn Easton, I love you.” One day this girl names julia came along and they instantly had a great connection. Finn has never been around or with a girl before Julia. This was very different for him. Julia found a lot of interesting things in Finn that no other girls find in him. In addition, “Worry and regret are both useless weights that provide no drag, they never did anything to slow down the planet for one goddamn second.” Time goes by fast and he doesn't want to waste any of it. Nothing ever goes his way, but he's finally found something right for him, Julia. He proceeded to get rid of all the negative things in his life and that made him a more enjoyable and confident kid. Furthermore, “Please let me do this alone, I promise we’ll come home, I just need to tell Julia how the play ends.” He needed to tell Julia that he loved her and that he's the best thing that ever happened to him.
