In David Guterson’s novel Snow falling on Cedars, there are a lot of characters who have major conflicts in their past, like Ishmael Chambers, Who he was a soldier in World War 2, which caused him a lot of stress and confusion. Ishmael is a protagonist in the novel, which he doesn’t always make the right decision. Nevertheless Ishmael Chambers is a literary character, therefore the protagonist in commercial fiction, is always heroic and always makes the right decisions, unlike literary fiction, where that doesn’t happen at first.

Before the war, When Ishmael was young, he was friends with a Japanese girl and her name is Hatsue Miyamoto. During this time, White and Japanese people are not allowed to hang out with each other, so they would hang out in secret during the day. So when they got a little older, they started liking each other and Ishmael kissed Hatsue. When he did that, Hatsue got confused, because she wanted to be true to her culture, but wanted also to go against society’s prejudices. So Hatsue with all the confusion, consequently she ignores Ishmael in all of liking him too, because of her parents and culture.
