The book Call of the Wild by Jack London gives the readers a look into the eyes of a man in the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s. It is a fiction book but the realism of it is that it tells the story of men in the arctic trying hard to live through it. The readers get to feel what it was like to live through the Klondike. Call of the Wild is like a portal, with its gritty description of the cold, and harsh life of a creature adapting to the Klondike. The protagonist of the story was Buck( he is one of the sled team dogs), and he had many antagonist on his journey. The main one though was main examples are Manuel selling Buck to bad men who then beat Buck all the way down to the Klondike. He was against the Yeehats at the end of the story, and through the rest of his life. There were good men too like John Thornton. Those allies were his dog team members, Sol-leks and Dave, just working hard on the trail and not getting into trouble. Creatures like Billie are not fit to survive in the Klondike, but creatures like his brother Joe were mean creatures. The later one of the two additions of the team Pike who is lazy and could be helpful does nothing, and then Dub the clumsy, and odd dog who gets blamed for the trouble that Buck does. Buck meets Hal who beats his dogs to near death. Also, there was Charles who was married to Mercedes(Hal’s sister) who just follows Hal. Mercedes who whines, complains, and sits on her butt all day. What I liked about this book is that it shows what people in the Klondike were like, but something I did not like was that I did not get a clear explanation of everything that was happening that would improve the story.
