Usually, adults are people who are sought after when problems occur because of their wisdom and knowledge. However, in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the lack of guidance and mentorship leads to the lovers death. Although some may argue Romeo and Juliet are responsible for their own deaths, what is more important is that Lady Capulet and Friar Lawrence are to blame for the deaths of the couple because they were supposed to give them guidance to their problems, not make them worse. The first person responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Lady Capulet due to her lack of understanding Juliet's feelings. For example, when having a private conversation with her, she says, “Well, think of marriage now. Younger than you here in Verona, ladies of esteem are already mothers (Shakespeare 1.3, 71-73). Lady Capulet puts Verona’s expectations and standards ahead of Juliet's happiness and wellbeing. She helps arrange Juliet's marriage to Paris, ignoring her feelings. Romeo’s bad decision on going to the Capulet party, despite the ongoing feud between the families, sets up the tragic events. Juliet could also be blamed for her unwillingness to communicate with her family about her secret, which led to misbeliefs. While it is true that Romeo and Juliet may be to blame for their own deaths, the evidence clearly shows that Friar and Lady Capulet played bigger roles in the couple's deaths. The combined actions of these two individuals create an environment of secrecy, manipulation, and neglect. Their failure to talk openly and honestly with them, as well as to give good advice, worsens the already bad situation.
