Romeo and Juliet Blame Essay William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, published in 1597, tells the story of a forbidden love between two teenagers in the middle of a family rivalry. The two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, had an ongoing feud within the town. Romeo and Juliet fell in love at a cavallet party which Romeo broke into. After falling in love they wished to get married. Nurse and Friar Lawrence helped arrange a secret marriage ceremony. Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, challenged Romeo to a duel for crashing the royal party, which led to Tybalt’s death. Tybalt’s death led to Romeo being banished and Juliet left the town devastated. Friar Lawrence says that all he knows is why Romeo and Juliet killed themselves and the Nurse knows more about the marriage part (Act 5, Scene 3, pg 255). This was irresponsible for Friar Lawrence and the Nurse for keeping Romeo and Juliet’s relationship secret. The friar was wrong for not making sure Romeo got the letter or waited in the tomb in case he came. The Nurse told Juliet that marrying Count Paris would be best for her (Act 3, Scene 5, pg 189). The nurse was unsupportive of Juliet’s wants and standards. I feel if she would have been more encouraging, Juliet would have included her in the plan and she could have helped or talked Juliet out of it. Friar Lawrence and the Nurse could have been more influential and stepped in as parietal figures, which I think would have saved Romeo and Juliet’s lives. Although both Romeo and Juliet themselves and the authority figures contributed to their deaths, I think the authority figures are the most to blame. If they would have had more of a mentor, then they would have had less of a chance of making such unwise
