Actions can give words substance or insignificance. A person must act upon what he or she says in order to have other people trust them. When a person does not follow through, he or she may be blamed for a result of a situation as seen in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Marquez’s novella, retells the accounts of a young man’s murder, Santiago Nasar in a Latin American society. The novella focuses on the collective and individual efforts to cause Nasar’s murder, while at the same time discussing gender roles, social rankings, and honor. Since there is no clear indication of who is to blame for Nasar’s murder, there are valid arguments for various characters. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Marquez uses community members’ actions to to prove that everyone in the community played a role in Santiago Nasar’s murder. Victoria Guzman’s choice to not warn Santiago Nasar about the Vicario brothers establishes that she should be liable for her actions since she could have prevented Nasar’s murder. Additionally, Don Lazaro Aponte’s and Father Carmen Amador excuses and carelessness towards Nasar’s murder prove that they should be held accountable for Nasar’s murder because they could have informed Nasar about the Vicario brothers’ murder plot. These characters actions bring light to the fact that people should do everything in their power to be assertive rather than passive because they have a better chance of seeing a positive outcome.
