Graham Cregg Mrs. Gaston Pre-Ap English 9 18 March 2024 Romeo and Juliet Faults In the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the fault of this tragedy is shared by many characters in the play. Many characters may be at fault, but some characters share more of the blame than the rest. Romeo, Juliet, Friar Lawrence and the families are most at fault for the outcome of this play. This play shows how the families hatred for one another destroyed the love, or lust, Romeo and Juliet had. Most people who approach this topic say that fate is to blame, and end up looking past the main protagonists of the whole play, Romeo and Juliet. “Give me, Give me” (Romeo 4.1.122). Juliet is asking for the potion that will cause this tragedy, just to be with a man she has spent no more than twenty-four hours with in total. “Then I defy you stars” (Romeo 5.1.24). Romeo is trying to fight fate, which is already predetermined, with Juliet. If Romeo and Juliet did not follow lust, they would have never perished. Though the protagonists were most to blame, supporting characters were also to blame for the outcome of the tragedy. Friar Lawrence is an amazing example of a supporting character causing the outcome. “To turn your households’ rancor into pure love” (Romeo 2.3.92). Friar Lawrence decided to marry the two lovers to try and stop the fighting between the two households. “So smile the heavens upon this holy act” (Romeo 2.6.1). Friar Lawrence decides to marry the two lovers before they are even able to tell their families about the love they share. If Friar Lawrence was not so hasty, they could have explained the situation to their families and avoided this whole situation. The families made love impossible even before Romeo and Juliet came into this world. “Doth with the death bury their parents’ strife” (Romeo Prologue.8). The death of Romeo and Juliet is the only thing that could end the family's feud. Even if the two got married, there is still a low chance the families would accept each other. “If they do see thee, they will murder thee” (Romeo 2.2.70). If Romeo was caught seeing Juliet, he would have been executed immediately by her family. “See what scourge is laid upon your hate?” (Romeo 5.3.292). The Prince informs the families that this death was not only Romeo and Juliet’s fault, but also their fault for battling all of these years. The family feud cast the fate of death on Romeo and Juliet’s love. In the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the blame is shared between many characters besides the main protagonists.
