Romeo and Juliet, a tragic love story by William Shakespeare, is the story of a young couple who are torn apart by their own families. There are many people to blame for this tragedy, but no one is more responsible than Romeo. His violent actions like killing Tybalt, killing Paris and then poisoning himself all lead to the death of Juliet. Acts 1 and 2 follow the early stages of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. They met, fell in love, and then learned that their families were enemies. The Montagues and the Capulets have been feuding for decades. In Act 3, Romeo and his friend Mercutio fight Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. Tybalt killed Mercutio. To get revenge, Romeo killed Tybalt. “Romeo, away be gone! The citizens are up, and Tybalt is slain" (3.1.130). Benvolio tells Romeo to hide. The citizens were coming and everyone would see what he had done. The Prince learned of Romeo killing Tybalt and banished him from Verona for this. He declared, “Immediately, we exile him hence" (3.1.184). Now that Romeo is banished, he can no longer be with his newlywed wife. This will cause more problems later. Juliet planned to fake her death to get out of marrying Paris. The Friar gave her a potion to make her appear dead for 48 hours. During this, Romeo heard of Juliet’s death and came back to Verona. Pais tried to keep him from seeing Juliet’s grave.
